American Party
Who were they against?
Also known as the Know-Nothing Party, they were organized in opposition to the Federalists. After the Federalists died out, members had merged with the Whigs, the Democrats, and the Republicans. In some ways, they were opposed to all of these parties as well because of their nationalistic ideals and beliefs.
What were their domestic goals?
They were very nativist against other religions. Membership to the party was limited to Protestant males or British American lineage. They proposed laws that restricted immigration of the Irish, Germans, and others who carried a different religion. They opposed and fought against any legislation that showed acceptance of immigrants. Some members of the party were radical enough to incite violence against some religious sects. The Louisville Riot was only the most spectacular of violent riots between Know Nothing activists and Catholics in 1855. For a short period of time, the party was very popular to the point there were souvenirs in dedication to them.
